ARCHAEOLOGIES OF THE FUTURE / a—f is a dynamic platform for encounters—founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina—that unfolds through artistic and research-based actions, engaging with practices, objects, choreographies, artists, knowledge, and experiences across the performing arts and their hybrid forms.
Founded by Amador Alina Folini in collaboration with Catalina Lescano, and supported by the constant participation of Camila Malenchini and Constanza Zarnitzer, with contributions from Flor Carrizo, Hiedrah Club de Baile, and Micaela Moreno, a—f has evolved as a living organism, transforming and mutating with each edition. Today, it exists in a state of transition, fragility, and opacity.
Since 2014, each year, a—f manifests in multiple forms: as a network-platform, a program of transnational residencies, a performing arts festival, exhibitions, publications, and curatorial exercises. It generates vibratory and affective connections, street gatherings, process accompaniment, study groups, observatories, an open library, a living archive, practice laboratories, activations, and programming cycles in public, private, and academic cultural spaces. It also collaborates with creation centers, festivals, and collectives across Latin America and Europe.
The project’s name signals its intent: to perform archaeology through artistic works, practices, and creative processes—a method for excavating the present, experiencing it non-linearly, and perhaps uncovering futures that were once primitive.
a—f
a—f presented six annual editions until 2020 and was recognized as a project of Cultural Interest by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and the Ministry of Culture of Argentina. It has received institutional support, funding, and collaborations aimed at both its organizational structure and participating artists. Venues have included Fábrica Perú, MACBA – Museum of Contemporary Art of Buenos Aires, Centro Nacional de la Música y la Danza, CCK, El Cultural San Martín, UNSAM – Experimental Center for the Arts, UNA – Espacio Caffarena 72, and Parque de la Estación.
The project has facilitated artist mobility through partnerships with Institut Français, Goethe Institut, PICE / Acción Cultural Española, Chile’s National Council for Culture and the Arts, FONCA Mexico, Fundação Gulbenkian (Portugal), and the Community of Madrid’s Secretaría de Cultura. It also partnered with FIDCU – Uruguay’s International Contemporary Dance Festival – to create binational technical production and photo-audiovisual teams.
Since 2021, a—f has embraced delocalization, operating across multidimensional territories and creating collaborative spaces in Santiago de Chile, Tenerife, Montevideo, Bogotá, Barcelona, São Paulo, and beyond. Even amid the pandemic, it has explored virtual spaces—online or, metaphorically, telepathic—to sustain connection and creativity.
